About the Programme

Advances in statistical procedures havebrought a change in all spheres of sciences and are being increasingly used byresearchers to solve scientific hypotheses. There are lot of software availablefor data analysis today: spreadsheets like Excel, batch-orientedprocedure-based systems like SAS; point-and-click GUI-based systems like SPSSand so on. The packages SPSS, GAUSS, SAS are expensive, and Excel is cumbersomeat large file sizes. R is now the leading tool for statistics, data analysis,and machine learning. It is more than a statistical package as it provides awide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modeling, classical statisticaltests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering etc.) and graphicaltechniques, and is highly extensible. One of R’s strengths is the ease withwhich well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, includingmathematical symbols and formulae where needed. Great care has been taken overthe defaults for the minor design choices in graphics with full user control.

The objective of the training program is toprovide a step-by-step guide on the use of R to carry out statistical analysisand techniques widely used in life, chemical and physical sciences.
